What Is Freon?
Freon is one of several kinds of refrigerants used in various cooling appliances. It starts as gas stored inside an aerosol can, which can turn into a liquid through heating processes. Technicians place the freon inside a circulating system within appliances or cold storage units.
The gas filters through evaporator coils, a compressor, and condenser coils, then filters back to the expansion valve. Evaporator coils allow the freon to absorb the heat around it, replacing the warm air with cool air. Condenser coils help the freon cool again after taking in all that heat.
Why Is My Air Conditioner Leaking Freon?
An AC problem may occur for several reasons, but the ones related to freon leaks have some consistent causes. When you have an AC refrigerant leak, it is likely to have occurred for at least one of these three reasons:
- Refrigerant leaks can occur from overactive vibrations within the machine. Several parts are functioning inside an AC, causing it to vibrate when used. Sometimes the vibrations loosen important parts and may cause the refrigerant inside the coils, compressor, or expansion valve to leak out.
- Damaged, loosened, or ill-fitted nuts and bolts inside the machine can also cause leaks. Because the freon travels through a constant system to suck out heat and cool down all over again, the parts it travels through need to be in top condition to prevent any leaks. However, during installation or repairs, sometimes these parts are not adequately taken care of or installed, and the freon will leak out as it continues its cyclical process.
- An AC unit, like any machine, breaks down over time and use and may need replacement parts. Time and poor management can damage the AC system and cause leaks. Consider having your AC unit checked yearly to catch components that are breaking or wearing down, which helps promote the overall lifespan of your AC unit and keep it running as best as possible.
As a note, freon does leak when the AC is off. If there is damage to the components that circulate the freon, it does not matter if the AC is currently functioning or on standby. The gas will leak out regardless.
Freon leaks are potentially hazardous depending on the type of freon your AC uses. If you stay in a small room subject to the freon leak, you could get refrigerant poisoning. You should immediately schedule a refrigerant leak repair if you suspect a freon leak.

Strange AC noises
Freon has lubricants within it that allow the circulation system to function. When there are leaks, the lubricants cannot work effectively, and the small parts inside the system grind together noisily.
Frequently freezing evaporator coils
The water that builds up on the evaporator coils can freeze up when exposed to leaking freon. The ice hinders the airflow, and the ice melting may contribute to leaks.
